Chapter 1

I was eight months pregnant when my husband’s mistress grabbed me by the hair at the top of our staircase—and the look on her face told me she wasn’t afraid of getting caught.

I had come home early from a prenatal appointment because my back was hurting.

The front door was unlocked.

Then I heard a woman laughing upstairs.

“Michael?”

Nobody answered.

I slowly climbed the stairs, one hand under my stomach.

When I reached our bedroom, a woman I had never met was standing beside my husband’s dresser.

She was wearing his shirt.

“Who are you?” I whispered.

She smiled.

“You must be Sarah.”

My blood went cold.

“How do you know my name?”

She walked toward me.

“Michael said you were emotional, but he never said you were this pathetic.”

I reached for my phone.

“Get out of my house.”

She knocked it from my hand.

Then she grabbed my hair.

“Michael is leaving you anyway.”

I screamed and tried to pull away.

“Let go of me! I’m pregnant!”

She glanced at my stomach.

“I know.”

Then she shoved me.

My heel slipped off the first step.

I fell backward and tumbled down the staircase, throwing both arms around my belly.

Pain exploded through my side when I hit the floor.

I heard her footsteps coming down behind me.

“Please,” I gasped. “Call an ambulance.”

She crouched beside me instead.

Then the front door suddenly opened.

Michael walked in and froze when he saw me lying at the bottom of the stairs.

I expected him to run toward me.

Instead, the woman stood up and whispered, “She found out.”

Michael’s face went completely white.

Then I saw what he was holding in his hand—and realized my fall might not have been an accident at all.
