Chapter 1

I was eight months pregnant when my husband’s mistress drove straight at me, knocking me onto the street—and when my husband slapped her for it, she screamed one sentence that made him turn white.

I had just stepped out of my OB-GYN’s office in Dallas.

My husband, Ryan, was supposed to pick me up.

But instead, I saw a black SUV waiting across the street.

I recognized the woman behind the wheel immediately.

Jessica.

The woman whose messages I had found on Ryan’s phone three weeks earlier.

She stared at my stomach.

Then the engine roared.

“Jessica, stop!”

The SUV jumped forward.

I tried to move.

The side of the car struck me, and I crashed onto the pavement.

Pain exploded through my lower stomach.

Then I felt something warm running down my legs.

“Help!”

People started screaming.

I curled both arms around my belly.

“Please, baby… please.”

A second car suddenly stopped in the middle of the road.

Ryan jumped out.

“Emily!”

He ran toward me and dropped to his knees.

When he saw the blood, his face went completely pale.

“What happened?”

I couldn’t even answer.

Then Jessica climbed out of the SUV.

“It was an accident.”

Ryan looked at her.

“You did this?”

“Ryan, listen to me.”

He stood and slapped her across the face.

“You could’ve killed my wife and my baby!”

Jessica stumbled backward.

For the first time, I saw fear in her eyes.

But then she started laughing.

Ryan froze.

“You think that’s your baby?”

My heart stopped.

Ryan stared at her.

“What did you just say?”

Jessica pointed at my stomach.

“Ask your wife where she really was the night you went to Chicago eight months ago.”

Ryan slowly turned toward me.

I had never seen him look that terrified.

Before I could speak, Jessica pulled a sealed envelope from her purse.

“I already did the DNA test.”

Ryan’s hand began shaking.

Then Jessica whispered, “And Emily isn’t the only one who’s been lying to you.”
