Chapter 1

I Rushed Into My Five-Year-Old Daughter’s Hospital Room and Found Bruises All Over Her Body—Then Her Grandmother Tried to Stop Her From Telling Me Why.
I nearly fell through the hospital doors when the nurse told me where Emma was.
“Room 214,” she said. “Please hurry.”
I pushed the door open and stopped breathing.
My five-year-old daughter was curled beneath a white blanket, her face wet with tears.
Dark bruises covered her arms and legs.
“Mommy,” she whimpered.
I ran to the bed and pulled her against me.
“Baby, what happened?”
Emma looked toward the corner.
My mother-in-law, Diane, was standing there with her arms folded.
“It was an accident,” she said.
Emma shook her head.
“No, Mommy, Grandma—”
Diane suddenly rushed forward and clamped her hand over Emma’s mouth.
“You don’t know what you’re saying.”
I stared at her.
Then I shoved her away from the bed.
She stumbled backward into a chair.
“Do not touch my daughter!”
Diane stood up and pointed at me.
“She’s confused. The doctors gave her medicine.”
Emma started crying harder.
“Mommy, please don’t leave me with her again.”
That sentence broke something inside me.
Diane reached for Emma a second time.
I slapped her across the face.
The room went silent.
“You crazy woman!” she screamed.
I pulled out my phone with shaking hands.
“I’m calling the police.”
Diane’s confidence vanished.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”
“I understand exactly what I’m looking at.”
Emma grabbed my sleeve.
“There’s something under Grandma’s bed.”
Diane went completely still.
I put the phone on speaker and told the dispatcher I needed officers at the hospital immediately.
Then Emma whispered, “Daddy told Grandma to hide it before you came home.”
I looked at Diane.
May you like
Her face had turned white.
And that was when I realized my husband hadn’t answered a single one of my calls all day.
