Chapter 1

I caught my mother-in-law sneaking out of my bedroom with $5,000 from my dresser—and when I confronted her, my husband said something that made me wonder how long they had both been lying to me.
I had been saving that money for almost a year.
Five thousand dollars in cash, hidden inside an envelope beneath my clothes.
It was supposed to cover the deposit on a new apartment if my marriage to Ryan kept getting worse.
Only one person knew where I kept it.
Me.
That Saturday morning, I came home early from grocery shopping and heard footsteps upstairs.
“Ryan?”
No answer.
I quietly climbed the stairs.
Then my bedroom door opened.
My mother-in-law, Linda, stepped into the hallway holding her purse tightly against her chest.
“What are you doing in my room?”
She jumped.
“I was looking for the bathroom.”
“The bathroom is downstairs, Linda.”
Her face tightened.
I walked past her and opened my dresser.
The envelope was gone.
My stomach dropped.
“Give it back.”
“What are you talking about?”
“My five thousand dollars.”
Linda laughed.
“You think I stole from you?”
I reached for her purse.
She jerked it away so violently that it fell from her hand.
The contents spilled across the floor.
And there was my envelope.
I picked it up and counted the money.
Only three thousand dollars remained.
“Where’s the other two thousand?”
Linda’s face went pale.
Then the front door opened downstairs.
Ryan had come home.
Linda immediately started screaming.
“Ryan! Your wife attacked me!”
He ran upstairs and found me holding the envelope while his mother cried beside him.
“She stole five thousand dollars from our bedroom,” I said.
Ryan didn’t look surprised.
Instead, he closed his eyes.
“Mom, I told you to wait until tonight.”
The hallway went completely silent.
I stared at my husband.
“You knew?”
Ryan looked at the envelope in my hand.
Then he said quietly, “Sarah, that money was never yours.”
I almost laughed.
“I earned every dollar.”
“No,” Linda whispered.
She wiped her tears and suddenly smiled.
Then she pulled a folded document from her coat pocket.
Ryan tried to grab it from her.
But I got there first.
I unfolded the paper.

My name was printed across the top.
And underneath it was a bank account I had never seen before—with a balance of $487,000.
