Chapter 1

I came home two weeks early from a business trip and found my five-year-old daughter kneeling beside the dog’s tray while my mother-in-law fed another child at our dining table. My husband was sitting beside a woman I had never seen before.

My suitcase was still in my hand when I heard my daughter crying.

“Mommy?”

I dropped everything and ran toward the dining room.

My little girl, Lily, was on her knees beside the dog’s feeding mat.

There was a plastic tray in front of her filled with scraps from dinner.

“Lily, what are you doing down there?”

Before she could answer, my mother-in-law, Carol, snapped, “Don’t interfere.”

I looked up.

Carol was sitting at my table, calmly spoon-feeding mashed potatoes to a little boy about Lily’s age.

Next to them sat my husband, Ryan.

And beside Ryan was a woman with one hand resting comfortably on his arm.

Nobody stood up.

Nobody even looked ashamed.

I rushed to Lily and pulled her against my chest.

Her cheeks were wet.

“Mommy, Grandma said I wasn’t allowed at the table anymore.”

I felt my whole body go cold.

“Why?”

Carol put down the spoon.

“Because she needs to learn her place.”

Ryan muttered, “Emily, don’t start.”

I stared at him.

“You let our daughter eat on the floor?”

“It’s not what it looks like.”

I saw a bowl of hot soup sitting in front of him.

Before I could think, I grabbed it and threw the soup straight into his face.

Ryan jumped up screaming.

“What the hell is wrong with you?!”

“What’s wrong with ME?”

I pointed at Lily.

“She is five years old!”

The woman beside him stood and pulled the little boy behind her.

Carol rushed toward me.

“You’ve been gone for two weeks, and this family has finally had some peace.”

“This is my family.”

Carol laughed.

“No, sweetheart. You’re the one who doesn’t understand.”

Lily suddenly tightened her arms around my neck.

Then she whispered something that made me stop breathing.

“Mommy… Daddy makes me call that lady ‘Mom’ when you’re gone.”

I slowly looked at Ryan.

May you like

The woman started crying.

And the little boy looked up at my husband and asked, “Daddy, are we going home now?”
