Chapter 1

I came home two months early from a business trip and heard my seven-year-old daughter crying behind the locked backyard shed. My wife thought I wouldn’t return until November—but when I broke that door open, I learned what she had been doing to my little girl while I was gone.
My name is Daniel, and I had been away in Seattle for work for almost six weeks.
My wife, Vanessa, called me every night and told me everything at home was fine.
Whenever I asked to speak to my daughter, Sophie, Vanessa always had an excuse.
“She’s asleep.”
“She’s at a friend’s house.”
“She doesn’t feel like talking.”
Something started bothering me.
So when my project finished early, I decided not to tell Vanessa I was coming home.
I wanted to surprise Sophie.
The house outside Denver was strangely quiet when I arrived.
Vanessa’s car wasn’t in the driveway.
I walked inside calling, “Sophie? Daddy’s home!”
No answer.
Then I heard something faint from the backyard.
Crying.
I followed the sound toward our old storage shed.
“Daddy?”
My heart stopped.
“Sophie?”
Tiny fists started pounding from inside.
“Daddy, please get me out!”
The door had a padlock on it.
I grabbed a hammer from the garage and smashed the lock until it broke.
When the door opened, Sophie stumbled straight into my arms.
She looked exhausted, and an empty water bottle sat beside an old blanket on the floor.
I held her so tightly my hands were shaking.
“Who put you in here?”
Sophie started sobbing.
“Vanessa.”
I felt sick.
“She said I was bad because I kept asking for food.”
“How long have you been sleeping here?”
Sophie looked down.
“Since you left.”
At that exact moment, Vanessa’s car pulled into the driveway.
She walked into the backyard carrying shopping bags and froze when she saw the broken lock.
“Daniel?”
I stood slowly.
“You locked my daughter in a shed?”
Vanessa dropped the bags.
“It’s not what you think.”
Sophie hid behind me.
“She didn’t feed me yesterday, Daddy.”
Something inside me snapped.
I rushed toward Vanessa, grabbed her by the hair, and slapped her before she could back away.
She screamed and tried to push me off.
“You monster!”
My hand closed around her throat for a moment as rage took over.
Then Sophie screamed, “Daddy, stop!”
I released Vanessa and stepped back, breathing hard.
But Vanessa wasn’t looking at me anymore.
She was staring at Sophie.
“You stupid little liar,” she hissed.
I immediately moved between them.
“Say one more word to my daughter.”
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
“You still think she’s the reason I did this?”
I froze.
“What are you talking about?”
She reached into her purse and threw an envelope onto the ground.
My name was written across the front.
Inside were court documents, bank records, and a copy of my late first wife’s will.
Sophie’s mother had died five years earlier.
I had never seen these papers before.
Then I found a bank statement showing monthly transfers into Vanessa’s private account.
More than $180,000 in less than two years.
I looked at her.
“Where did this money come from?”
Vanessa wiped her mouth and smiled through tears.
“That money belongs to Sophie.”
My stomach dropped.
Then she pointed at the final page in my hand.
“Read who gets control of the trust if your daughter is declared unfit to inherit.”
I looked down at the signature.
And the name printed beneath it made my knees nearly give out.

It wasn’t Vanessa’s.
It was my own mother’s.
