Chapter 1

I came home from work and heard my six-year-old son pounding from inside the old refrigerator in our garage. My mother-in-law stood nearby and calmly said, “Maybe now he’ll learn to obey.”

I had been working late at a dental office outside Phoenix that afternoon.

My mother-in-law, Linda, was watching my son, Ethan.

The moment I walked inside, I knew something was wrong.

His backpack was by the door.

But Ethan was nowhere in sight.

“Where’s my son?”

Linda didn’t even look up from the television.

“He’s being punished.”

My stomach tightened.

“For what?”

“He talked back to me.”

Then I heard a faint banging sound from the garage.

Bang.

Bang.

“Mommy!”

I dropped my purse and ran.

“Ethan!”

His voice came from an old refrigerator we kept near the garage wall.

The doors had been tied shut with an extension cord.

I screamed his name and ripped at the knot.

“Mommy, I can’t breathe!”

My hands shook so badly I could barely get the cord loose.

Finally, I yanked the door open.

Ethan fell forward into my arms, crying and gasping.

His face was soaked with tears.

I held him against my chest.

“How long were you in there?”

“Grandma said I had to stay until Daddy came home.”

I slowly turned around.

Linda was standing in the doorway with her arms crossed.

“He was disrespectful,” she said. “Children need consequences.”

“You put my six-year-old child inside a refrigerator.”

“It wasn’t even turned on.”

I stared at her.

She actually thought that made it acceptable.

“You could have killed him.”

Linda rolled her eyes.

“Oh, please. My children survived real discipline.”

Something inside me snapped.

I walked toward her and pointed at the front door.

“Get out of my house.”

She laughed.

“This is my son’s house.”

Then Ethan suddenly grabbed my shirt.

“Mommy… Grandma made me get inside because I saw something.”

I looked down at him.

“What did you see?”

His eyes moved toward Linda’s purse on the kitchen counter.

“I saw Grandma putting something in Daddy’s drink every night.”

Linda’s face went completely white.

May you like

And before I could reach the purse, the garage door opened.

My husband had just come home.
