Chapter 1

"I came home from work and heard my six-year-old son crying behind the locked storage-room door. When my mother-in-law calmly called it “punishment,” I did something my husband never thought I was capable of.

I had worked a double shift at a hospital outside Atlanta that Friday.

My mother-in-law, Linda, had offered to watch my son, Ethan, until I got home.

The house was strangely quiet when I walked in.

“Ethan?”

No answer.

Linda was sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee.

“Where’s my son?”

She barely looked up.

“He’s learning a lesson.”

My stomach tightened.

“What lesson?”

Then I heard it.

A faint cry coming from the storage room behind the garage.

“Mommy!”

I dropped my bag and ran.

The door was locked from the outside.

“Ethan!”

“Mommy, please get me out!”

I grabbed the handle and slammed my shoulder against the door.

It didn’t move.

I kicked near the lock again and again until the old wooden frame cracked.

The door flew open.

Ethan was curled up on the floor with tears covering his face.

He threw himself into my arms.

“I’m sorry, Mommy. I’m sorry.”

I held him against my chest.

“Sorry for what?”

Linda appeared behind me without the slightest trace of guilt.

“He threw away his dinner.”

I stared at her.

“You locked a six-year-old child in here because he didn’t finish his food?”

“He needs discipline,” she said. “Something you obviously don’t know how to give him.”

Ethan whispered against my shoulder, “Grandma said I had to stay until tomorrow morning.”

My hands started shaking.

Linda folded her arms.

“Maybe next time he’ll listen.”

I handed Ethan my phone and told him to wait in the living room.

Then I walked straight toward her.

“Don’t you ever touch my child again.”

Linda laughed.

“You wouldn’t have this house without my son.”

I slapped her.

Her coffee cup hit the floor.

Before she could recover, I pushed open the storage-room door and pointed inside.

“You think being locked in there teaches people lessons?”

Her face changed.

“You wouldn’t dare.”

Ten seconds later, I shut the door and turned the lock.

Linda started pounding from the other side.

Then Ethan tugged on my sleeve.

“Mommy…”

I looked down.

His face had gone pale.

May you like

“Grandma wasn’t alone when she put me in there.”

Before I could ask what he meant, someone knocked three times from inside the storage room.
