Chapter 1

I came home from work and found my two-year-old daughter curled up alone in the freezing sleet. Through the locked window, my mother-in-law watched her cry.
“Lucy!”
I dropped my bag and ran across the icy driveway.
My baby wore only thin pajamas and one wet sock.
Her lips trembled as I lifted her against my coat.
“Mommy… cold.”
I wrapped her tightly and rushed to the front door.
It was locked.
“Diane, open this door!”
My mother-in-law stood in the hallway with her arms crossed.
“She needed to learn what happens when she disobeys me.”
“She’s two years old!”
I pounded on the door until my fists hurt.
Lucy’s tiny body shook against my chest.
I called 911, then grabbed the spare key hidden beneath the porch railing.
Diane tried to hold the door closed from inside.
I forced it open and carried Lucy into the warm living room.
Diane reached for her. “Give me that spoiled brat.”
I shoved her hand away.
She slapped me across the face.
I placed Lucy safely on the couch and covered her with a blanket.
Then Diane grabbed my hair and tried to drag me backward.
I turned, caught her wrists, and pushed her away from my child.
We crashed into the coffee table as she swung at me again.
“You’re never touching my daughter again!”
My husband, Ryan, suddenly ran downstairs.
Instead of checking Lucy, he stepped between Diane and me.
“What did you do to my mother?”
I stared at him in disbelief.
“She locked our baby outside in freezing rain!”
Diane pointed at me. “She’s lying. She put Lucy outside herself.”
Then Lucy began crying and pointed toward the security camera above the front door.
“Grandma pushed me.”
Ryan’s face went pale as I opened the camera app.

The footage showed Diane forcing Lucy outside—but someone else was standing beside her, holding the door open.
When that person turned toward the camera, I realized it was Ryan.
