Chapter 1

I Came Home From Work and Found My Five-Year-Old Son Tied to a Tree—Then My Husband Walked In and Believed His Mother’s Lie.

I knew something was wrong when I saw Noah’s little shoes in the grass.

Then I heard him crying.

“Mommy!”

I dropped my bag and ran toward the oak tree in our front yard.

My five-year-old son was tied around the waist with a rope, his cheeks soaked with tears.

“Mommy, please get me down.”

My hands shook as I untied him.

“Who did this to you?”

He pointed toward the porch.

My mother-in-law, Carol, was sitting there drinking iced tea like nothing had happened.

“He needed discipline,” she said.

I stared at her.

“You tied my child to a tree?”

“He ran into the street after I told him not to.”

“So you tied him up?”

Carol stood and rolled her eyes.

“You’re too soft with him, Emily.”

Noah buried his face against my chest.

“Grandma said bad boys get left outside.”

I felt my whole body go cold.

“You will never touch him like that again.”

Carol stepped closer.

“This is my son’s house, and I’ll discipline my grandson however I want.”

I handed Noah my phone and told him to stand by the door.

Then Carol grabbed my arm.

“Don’t walk away from me.”

I shoved her hand off.

She shoved me back.

Within seconds we were struggling in the yard, both of us yelling.

That was when Ryan’s truck pulled into the driveway.

The moment Carol saw her son, she suddenly let go of me and threw herself onto the ground.

“Ryan!” she screamed. “Help me!”

He ran toward us.

Carol clutched her shoulder and started crying.

“She attacked me for no reason.”

“That’s a lie!” I shouted.

Ryan looked at his mother on the ground, then at me.

“What the hell did you do?”

Noah ran toward him.

“Daddy, Grandma tied me—”

Carol cut him off.

“Don’t listen to him! She told him to say that!”

Ryan’s face changed.

Then Noah held up my phone and whispered, “Mommy… I recorded Grandma before you came home.”

Carol stopped crying instantly.
