Chapter 1

I came home from the grocery store and found my four-year-old daughter tied to a chair in the corner of the living room. My mother-in-law was sitting ten feet away watching television like nothing was wrong.
For a second, I couldn’t even breathe.
“Mommy!” Lily cried when she saw me.
I dropped every bag in my hands.
“What happened to her?”
My mother-in-law, Diane, barely looked up.
“She needed to learn a lesson.”
I rushed to Lily and started untying the scarf wrapped around her wrists.
“She’s FOUR!”
Diane stood up.
“She threw her lunch on the floor.”
Lily shook her head through tears.
“No, Grandma did.”
Diane’s face hardened.
“Stop lying.”
I pulled Lily into my arms.
Her little body was shaking.
“How long has she been sitting here?”
Diane crossed her arms.
“Maybe an hour.”
I stared at her.
“You tied my child up for an hour?”
“She needs discipline because you refuse to give her any.”
I grabbed my phone.
Diane suddenly moved toward me.
“Who are you calling?”
“My husband.”
She laughed.
“Call him. He already knows how difficult Lily is.”
That sentence stopped me cold.
“What do you mean, he knows?”
Before she could answer, the front door opened.
My husband, Jason, walked inside.
He saw Lily crying in my arms.
Then he saw the scarf on the floor.
“What happened?”
Diane immediately began sobbing.
“Your wife is threatening me because Lily had another tantrum.”
I looked at Jason.
“Your mother tied our daughter to a chair.”
His face changed, but not the way I expected.
He looked at his mother first.
Then he quietly said, “Rachel, maybe Mom was just trying to help.”
I felt sick.
Then Lily whispered something against my shoulder.
“Mommy… Grandma does this when Daddy is home too.”
The room went completely silent.

I slowly turned toward my husband.
And Jason wouldn’t look me in the eyes.
