Chapter 1

"I came home from a week-long business trip and found a strange woman’s shoes beside my front door. Then my five-year-old daughter ran to me crying and whispered, “Mommy, Daddy is upstairs with some lady.”
I had driven straight from the Nashville airport because I wanted to surprise my family.
Instead, the moment I opened the door, my stomach dropped.
A pair of red women’s heels sat beside my husband Daniel’s sneakers.
They weren’t mine.
“Emma?” I called.
No answer.
Then I heard something scraping across the kitchen floor.
My five-year-old daughter was on her knees with a wet rag in her hand, trying to clean spilled juice.
Her face was covered in tears.
“Mommy!”
She dropped the rag and ran into my arms.
I hugged her tightly.
“Why are you cleaning the floor by yourself?”
Emma glanced toward the stairs and lowered her voice.
“Daddy said I had to stay downstairs.”
My heart started pounding.
“Why?”
She pressed her face against my coat.
“Because Daddy is with some lady in your bedroom.”
I went completely still.
Then I heard laughter upstairs.
A woman’s laughter.
I grabbed the wooden broom handle leaning beside the pantry and headed for the stairs.
Emma followed until I turned around.
“Stay here, baby.”
I reached my bedroom and found the door locked.
“Daniel!”
Everything inside went silent.
I kicked the door open.
Daniel jumped away from the bed while a woman I had never seen before screamed and grabbed a blanket.
“Sarah, wait!”
I swung the broom handle at Daniel’s shoulder, then shoved the woman back when she rushed toward me.
“You brought her into MY HOUSE while our daughter was downstairs crying?”
Daniel grabbed the broom.
“You’re acting insane!”
“Who is she?”
The woman suddenly shouted, “Tell her, Daniel!”
I froze.
Daniel’s face lost all color.
The woman stepped between us, shaking with anger.
“You told me she was your EX-WIFE.”
My fingers loosened around the broom.
“What?”
Then Emma appeared in the doorway behind me.
The woman stared at my daughter.
Her expression changed instantly.
She pulled out her phone, opened a photograph, and held it toward me.

The picture showed Daniel holding another little girl who looked almost exactly like Emma.
Then the woman whispered, “That’s our daughter… and she’s five years old too.”
