Chapter 2

For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
The document in my hands looked official.
My full legal name.
Our address.
Lily’s name.
A notary stamp.
And at the bottom, a signature that looked almost exactly like mine.
Almost.
“What is this?”
Vanessa touched her cheek where I had hit her.
Her eyes were wet, but she was smiling.
“Read it.”
I looked at the heading again.
TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP AUTHORIZATION.
The words beneath it said I had voluntarily given Vanessa authority to make educational, medical, and residential decisions for Lily.
There was another paragraph.
If I became unavailable for longer than seven consecutive days, Vanessa could act as Lily’s primary guardian.
My business trip had lasted nine.
My stomach dropped.
“You forged my signature.”
“Prove it.”
I looked up.
Vanessa’s smile widened.
“You’re insane.”
“No, Daniel. I’m prepared.”
“You abused my daughter.”
“She’s my stepdaughter.”
“She is a four-year-old child.”
“And I’m the woman who has been raising her while you fly around the country pretending your job is more important than your family.”
I took one step toward her.
She immediately lifted her phone.
“Careful.”
I stopped.
“What?”
“I’m recording.”
Of course she was.
Vanessa turned the screen toward me.
The camera was already running.
She had captured me standing inches away from her.
Her cheek was red from the slap.
My hands were clenched.
For the first time since coming home, fear cut through my anger.
She had planned for this.
Maybe not my early arrival.
But everything else.
“You hit me,” she said softly.
“You hit Lily first.”
“Do you have that on your phone?”
“I have it on the security system.”
She laughed.
“Do you?”
I looked at the wall panel.
The screen suddenly went black.
My heart stopped.
“What did you do?”
Vanessa shrugged.
“Maybe the system malfunctioned.”
I rushed to the panel and tapped the screen.
Nothing.
I tried my phone app.
Unable to connect.
“What did you do?”
“Nothing.”
I grabbed my laptop from my travel bag.
Vanessa stood behind me calmly.
Too calmly.
I signed into the security account.
PASSWORD INCORRECT.
I tried again.
PASSWORD INCORRECT.
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“You should really stop using predictable passwords.”
I spun around.
“You deleted the footage?”
“Can you prove I did?”
My chest tightened.
From the kitchen doorway, I heard a small voice.
“Daddy?”
I turned.
Lily stood beside my sister, Rachel.
She had changed out of the maid costume and was wearing one of Rachel’s oversized T-shirts.
Rachel’s face was pale.
“What’s going on?”
Vanessa immediately changed.
The smile vanished.
Her shoulders dropped.
Tears filled her eyes.
“Rachel, thank God.”
I stared at her.
Vanessa covered her cheek.
“Your brother attacked me.”
Rachel looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at Lily.
“What?”
“He came home, misunderstood a game Lily and I were playing, screamed at me, and hit me.”
“That’s not what happened,” I said.
Vanessa started crying.
Real tears.
It was almost impressive.
“He’s been under so much pressure at work. I think he snapped.”
“You slapped Lily,” I said.
Vanessa looked horrified.
“I would never.”
Lily grabbed Rachel’s hand.
“She did.”
The room went silent.
Vanessa’s eyes flicked toward Lily.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
So did Rachel.
Lily took a tiny step backward.
“She made me clean,” Lily whispered. “And if I cried, I had to stand in the laundry room.”
Rachel’s expression hardened.
Vanessa shook her head.
“She’s confused.”
“I’m not confused!” Lily shouted.
It was the loudest I had ever heard my daughter speak.
Tears spilled down her face.
“You said Daddy didn’t want me!”
My heart broke.
I crossed the room and knelt.
“Lily.”
She ran into my arms.
I held her as she sobbed.
“I want Mommy.”
Those words crushed me.
Lily’s mother, my first wife, Sarah, had died when Lily was eighteen months old.
Vanessa knew that.
She knew exactly where Lily’s deepest wound was.
I looked over Lily’s head.
“What did you tell her about Sarah?”
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Nothing.”
Lily shook against me.
“She said Mommy went away because I was bad.”
Rachel inhaled sharply.
I stood.
Vanessa backed up.
“You need to leave.”
“This is my home too.”
“Not tonight.”
“You can’t legally remove me.”
“I can call the police.”
“Go ahead.”
She lifted her phone again.
“Tell them you hit your wife.”
The room went quiet.
She had me.
At least she thought she did.
I looked at Rachel.
“Take Lily next door.”
Vanessa immediately said, “No.”
Rachel froze.
Vanessa stepped toward Lily.
“She stays here.”
I moved between them.
“You’re not touching her.”
“She is legally under my care.”
“Not anymore.”
Vanessa held up the forged document.
“This says otherwise.”
Rachel looked at it.
“What is that?”
“A guardianship agreement.”
“He didn’t sign it,” Vanessa said before I could.
Then she blinked.
She had said the wrong thing.
Rachel’s eyebrows lifted.
Vanessa recovered quickly.
“I mean, he claims he didn’t sign it.”
I almost smiled.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For admitting you know I’m disputing the signature.”
Her face tightened.
I took out my phone.
This time I started recording.
“Say it again.”
“Stop filming me.”
“You had no problem filming thirty seconds ago.”
She turned away.
I kept the camera running.
“Rachel, take Lily.”
My sister nodded.
Vanessa suddenly lunged around me and grabbed Lily’s wrist.
“No!”
Lily screamed.
Everything happened at once.
Rachel pulled Lily backward.
I caught Vanessa’s arm.
Vanessa dropped to the floor.
She screamed as if I had shoved her.
“You’re hurting me!”
I released her immediately.
Rachel stared.
“Oh my God.”
Vanessa looked at my phone.
Then she smiled.
That was when I understood.
She wanted footage.
She wanted me angry.
She wanted me touching her.
I stepped back.
Far back.
“Rachel, call 911.”
Vanessa’s expression finally changed.
“You wouldn’t.”
Rachel already had her phone out.
Vanessa stood.
“Daniel, think carefully.”
“I am.”
“You slapped me.”
“And you abused a child.”
“The cameras are gone.”
I stared at her.
“You’re very confident about that.”
Something flickered in her eyes.
I was bluffing.
But she didn’t know that.
Rachel told the dispatcher our address.
Vanessa grabbed her purse.
“Fine.”
She headed for the door.
“Where are you going?” I asked.
“You told me to leave.”
“Stay until the police arrive.”
She laughed.
“You don’t get to order me around.”
Then she opened the door.
A police cruiser turned onto our street.
Vanessa stopped.
Two officers stepped out.
She looked at me.
For the first time all night, I saw genuine fear.
It disappeared quickly.
By the time the officers reached the porch, Vanessa was crying again.
“My husband assaulted me.”
One officer separated us immediately.
The other talked to Rachel.
I stayed beside Lily.
Twenty minutes later, I was standing in my own driveway answering questions while Vanessa sat in the back of an ambulance having her cheek photographed.
I told the officer everything.
The costume.
The cleaning.
The threats.
The cameras.
The forged document.
The officer listened carefully.
“Do you have copies of the recordings?”
“Not yet.”
“Not yet?”
“She changed the account password.”
“That account is in whose name?”
“Mine.”
He wrote something down.
“Contact the security company. They may retain cloud backups.”
Hope hit me.
Vanessa looked over from the ambulance.
She must have heard.
Because her face changed again.
The officer asked Lily only a few basic questions.
He did not push her.
He told me a child specialist would need to speak with her.
Then he looked at the red mark on Lily’s cheek.
“Has she been medically examined?”
“No.”
“Take her tonight.”
I nodded.
“What happens to Vanessa?”
“We’re still determining that.”
Then the second officer approached.
He whispered something.
The first officer looked at me.
His expression became harder.
“Mr. Carter, I need you to turn around.”
My blood went cold.
“What?”
“We have probable cause to place you under arrest for domestic assault.”
Rachel shouted, “Are you kidding me?”
The officer held up a hand.
“Ma’am, step back.”
I stared at Vanessa.
She was watching from the ambulance.
Not crying anymore.
Smiling.
“Daniel!” Lily screamed.
I turned toward her.
The officer grabbed my arm.
“Sir, don’t resist.”
“Daddy!”
Rachel held Lily as she fought to reach me.
I felt the handcuffs close around my wrists.
Vanessa stepped down from the ambulance.
She walked close enough that only I could hear.
“You should have read the rest of the document.”
May you like
Then she smiled.
“Because by tomorrow morning, Lily may legally be coming home with me.”
