Chapter 1

I came home early and saw my mother-in-law slap my four-year-old daughter so hard she fell to the floor—just because she reached for a piece of bread. What Evelyn didn’t know was that I was standing in the doorway watching everything.

For almost two years, Evelyn had lived in our house outside Atlanta.

Every month, I gave her $4,000 for food, medicine, clothes, and anything else she needed.

I never complained.

I thought taking care of her meant she would help take care of my daughter, Lily.

That afternoon, I came home early because my meeting had been canceled.

Before I opened the kitchen door, I heard Lily’s tiny voice.

“Grandma, I’m hungry.”

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Through the doorway, I saw a basket of fresh bread sitting in the middle of the table.

Lily climbed onto a chair and reached for one piece.

Evelyn suddenly grabbed her wrist.

“Did I tell you that you could touch that?”

Lily immediately pulled back.

“I’m sorry, Grandma.”

Then Evelyn slapped her.

Lily fell from the chair onto the kitchen floor.

For one second, I couldn’t move.

My daughter touched her cheek and started crying.

“I just wanted bread.”

Evelyn looked down at her without an ounce of guilt.

“You need to learn that not everything in this house belongs to you.”

I dropped my purse.

Evelyn spun around.

The color disappeared from her face.

“What are you doing home?”

I ran straight to Lily and pulled her into my arms.

Then I stood and shoved Evelyn away when she tried to grab me.

“You hit my child because she was hungry?”

Evelyn shouted, “Don’t put your hands on me!”

She lunged toward me, and suddenly we were struggling beside the kitchen table as Lily screamed.

My husband Daniel ran downstairs.

“WHAT IS GOING ON?”

I pointed at his mother.

“She slapped Lily to the floor over a piece of bread.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

Then he looked at me.

And instead of defending our daughter, he said, “Mom probably had a reason.”

I stared at him.

“A reason?”

Evelyn folded her arms.

“That child eats whatever she wants because you spoil her.”

I pulled out my phone.

“Interesting, considering I send you four thousand dollars every single month.”

Daniel’s head snapped toward me.

“You send her what?”

The kitchen went silent.

Evelyn’s face changed.

I slowly looked at my husband.

“You didn’t know?”

Daniel shook his head.

“My mother told me she was living off her Social Security.”

I opened my banking app.

“Forty-eight thousand dollars last year, Daniel.”

Evelyn suddenly reached for my phone.

I stepped back.

“Don’t touch me.”

Daniel stared at his mother.

“Where did all that money go?”

“I had expenses.”

“What expenses?”

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Then Lily stopped crying.

She looked up at me and whispered, “Mommy, Grandma buys presents for the other little girl.”

My stomach dropped.

“What other little girl?”

Evelyn went completely still.

Daniel slowly turned toward his mother.

Lily pointed toward Evelyn’s locked bedroom upstairs.

“The girl in all the pictures Grandma hides when Daddy comes home.”

Daniel’s voice shook.

May you like

“What pictures?”

And that was when Evelyn whispered, “You were never supposed to know she existed.”
