Chapter 1

"I came home early and found my seven-month-old daughter screaming in our housekeeper’s arms—while my wife stood across the room insisting, “She dropped the baby, not me.”
I had spent twelve hours at my company’s headquarters in Manhattan and only wanted to see my daughter, Lily.
The second I opened the front door, I heard her crying.
Not normal crying.
Terrified crying.
I ran toward the living room and found our housekeeper, Maria, kneeling on the floor with Lily pressed against her chest.
“What happened?”
Maria looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Mr. Carter, please check her. She hit the floor.”
My wife, Vanessa, rushed in behind her.
“She’s lying!”
I stared at Vanessa.
“What do you mean?”
Vanessa pointed at Maria.
“She was carrying Lily, lost her temper, and dropped her.”
Maria’s face went white.
“That is not true.”
“Stop lying!” Vanessa screamed.
I carefully took Lily and noticed she was shaking against my chest.
My hands started trembling.
“Someone tell me exactly what happened.”
Maria looked straight at me.
“Your wife threw her.”
The room went silent.
Vanessa laughed like the accusation was ridiculous.
“You’re going to believe a maid over your own wife?”
Maria wiped her face.
“I saw Mrs. Carter yelling because the baby wouldn’t stop crying.”
Vanessa stepped toward her.
“You’re fired.”
I moved between them.
“Nobody is leaving.”
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“Ethan, she’s trying to destroy our marriage.”
Then Maria said something that made Vanessa freeze.
“Check the camera.”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“What camera?”
I looked toward the small security camera above the bookshelf.
We had installed it months earlier after a break-in.
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“That thing hasn’t worked in weeks.”
I took out my phone anyway.
The security app opened.
There was footage from fifteen minutes earlier.
Vanessa suddenly reached for my phone.
“Ethan, don’t.”
I pulled it away and pressed play.
On the screen, Vanessa was standing over Lily while the baby cried in her play area.
Maria was nowhere in the room.
Then Vanessa lifted my daughter.
I heard her voice through the recording.
“You ruined everything the day you were born.”
My stomach turned.
Then I watched my wife throw my seven-month-old daughter onto the carpeted floor.
Maria came running in seconds later, shoved Vanessa away, and lifted Lily into her arms.
I looked up from the phone.
Vanessa wasn’t angry anymore.
She looked terrified.

Then another notification appeared on the screen.
The camera system had detected and saved dozens of similar clips from the weeks I had been away on business.
