Chapter 1: The Promotion Banquet

“My wife doesn’t outrank the men in my family.””

Colonel Grant Lane’s voice cut through the ballroom.

Then he threw my promotion certificate onto the floor.

The framed document struck the polished marble with a crack loud enough to silence more than a hundred officers, spouses, and senior commanders.

I stared at it.

Captain Audrey Lane.

Commanding Officer.

I had waited eleven years to see those words.

Six deployments.

Two commendations.

Countless nights studying after everyone else had gone home.

And now my husband stood over the certificate as though it were garbage.

“Grant,” I said quietly.

“Pick it up.””

His jaw tightened.

A few officers shifted uncomfortably.

Nobody spoke.

Grant leaned closer.

“You embarrassed me.””

“I got promoted.””

“You were supposed to decline.””

I almost laughed because the idea was so absurd.

“Decline a command position?””

“You knew what this would do.””

“To whom?””

“To me.””

There it was.

Not our marriage.

Not our baby.

Him.

I placed one hand over my six-month belly.

Our daughter had been kicking all evening. Ten minutes earlier, I had been standing beside the stage while officers congratulated me.

Grant had smiled for photographs.

The moment the cameras moved away, his face changed.

“You promised we’d discuss this at home,” I said.

“I’m discussing it now.””

“By humiliating me?””

His eyes flicked toward the people watching us.

“That’s exactly what you did to me.””

I lowered my voice.

“Grant, stop.””

He grabbed the back of my chair.

Then he kicked it sideways.

The chair shot out beneath me.

I crashed onto one knee.

Pain exploded through my leg.

Both arms wrapped around my belly instinctively.

“Grant, the baby!””

Gasps rippled across the room.

Major Ellis stepped forward.

Grant looked at him.

“Stay out of this.””

Ellis stopped.

That hurt almost as much as my knee.

I had served beside some of these people.

Trusted them.

Protected them.

Yet everyone seemed frozen by Grant’s rank and reputation.

I started pushing myself up.

Grant seized the front of my dress uniform.

“Maybe now you’ll listen.””

“Take your hands off me!””

He dragged me upward and slammed me against the banquet table.

Glasses tipped.

Silverware crashed.

Someone screamed.

My hip struck the table’s edge.

I immediately searched for movement inside my belly.

Nothing.

My blood went cold.

“Grant…”

He was still talking.

I barely heard him.

“Then learn obedience before our child learns it from you.””

I shoved his wrist.

“Get away from me!””

Grant looked down at the new insignia pinned to my uniform.

Then he ripped it off.

The metal tore fabric.

He held the insignia between two fingers.

“You think this changes what you are?””

“I earned that command.””

He dropped the insignia into his whiskey.

It disappeared beneath the amber liquid.

For several seconds, I simply stared.

Then my daughter kicked.

Hard.

Relief almost buckled my knees.

I looked around the ballroom.

Faces everywhere.

Captains.

Majors.

Colonels.

People who had lectured younger officers about courage.

“Is nobody going to stop him?””

Silence.

Grant placed his forearm against my shoulder and drove me backward.

“Nobody here answers to a captain.””

“Enough.””

The voice came from behind him.

An older woman wearing a long black coat stepped between us.

Grant turned.

“Who the hell are you?””

She ignored him.

Instead, she looked at me.

Her eyes dropped to my stomach.

“Audrey, are you hurt?””

Grant laughed.

“This is a private family matter.””

The woman slowly turned toward him.

“No,” she said.

“You made it public.””

Grant stepped closer.

“I asked who you are.””

She reached for the buttons of her coat.

My heart stopped.

I knew that voice.

I knew those eyes.

But she was supposed to be overseas.

She removed the coat.

A four-star general’s uniform appeared beneath it.

Chairs scraped backward across the ballroom.

Every officer stood.

Grant’s face went white.

General Rebecca Mercer looked directly at him.

“I’m the general who approved Audrey’s promotion.””

Grant’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Then my mother took one step closer.

“And I’m the mother of the pregnant officer you just assaulted.””

The ballroom doors opened.

May you like

Military police entered.

And Grant finally understood why my mother had come home early.
