Chapter 1

Eight Months Pregnant, I Was Forced to Wash My Mother-in-Law’s Clothes by Hand—Then My Husband Came Home and Believed Her Lie.

I was folding baby clothes when my mother-in-law, Linda, stormed into the laundry room carrying a basket.

She dumped the entire pile of dirty clothes straight into my face.

“You’ve been sitting around all day again.”

I stared at her, one hand resting on my eight-month pregnant belly.

“The doctor told me not to stand for long periods.”

Linda laughed.

“Pregnancy isn’t a disability.”

She pointed at a plastic basin on the floor.

“Wash them.”

I thought she was joking.

“We have a washing machine.”

“My clothes get ruined in machines.”

“Then wash them yourself.”

Her face changed instantly.

“You live in my son’s house and you think you can talk to me like that?”

I slowly stood.

“This is my house too.”

Linda grabbed the basin filled with dirty gray water from clothes she had already soaked.

“Your generation is unbelievably lazy.”

“Put that down.”

Instead, she lifted it over me.

The freezing dirty water crashed over my head and soaked my dress.

I gasped as my baby kicked hard.

My foot slipped, and I grabbed the counter before I fell.

Linda looked at me without an ounce of regret.

“Maybe now you’ll learn some respect.”

That was when the front door opened.

“Emily?”

My husband, Ryan, had come home early.

Linda immediately dropped the basin and changed her expression.

“Ryan! Thank God you’re here.”

He rushed into the laundry room and stared at me dripping wet.

“What happened?”

Before I could answer, Linda started crying.

“She refused to help me, started screaming, and then she slipped into the basin.”

I stared at her in disbelief.

“That is not what happened.”

Ryan looked between us.

“Mom wouldn’t pour dirty water on a pregnant woman, Emily.”

Those words hurt more than the water.

Then my five-year-old daughter appeared in the doorway holding her tablet.

“Daddy?”

Ryan turned.

She looked terrified.

“Grandma forgot I was recording my baby video for Mommy.”

Linda’s face went white.

My daughter tapped the screen.

And Linda’s own voice filled the room.
