Chapter 1

A Woman Slapped My Five-Year-Old Daughter Over a Spilled Glass of Wine—Then Ordered Her to Kneel in Front of Everyone.
I heard the slap before I saw my daughter fall.
“Mommy!”
I turned from the wedding reception table and saw five-year-old Emma clutching her cheek beside a woman in a white designer dress stained with red wine.
The woman was Vanessa Whitmore, the groom’s wealthy older sister.
“You little brat!” she shouted.
Emma shook so hard she could barely speak.
“I’m sorry… I didn’t mean to…”
A waiter had bumped Emma from behind, but nobody seemed interested in that.
Vanessa grabbed Emma’s wrist.
“You ruined a three-thousand-dollar dress.”
“Please,” Emma cried. “I’m sorry.”
Vanessa pointed at the floor.
“Kneel.”
People around them went silent.
Emma stared at her.
“What?”
“You heard me. Get on your knees and apologize properly.”
My daughter’s little face crumpled.
“I want my mommy.”
That was when I started running.
“Take your hands off my child!”
Vanessa turned just as I reached them.
I ripped Emma away and pulled her against my chest.
Her arms locked around my neck.
“Mommy, I didn’t do it on purpose.”
“I know, baby.”
Vanessa laughed.
“Control your kid before she destroys something else.”
I stared at the red handprint forming on Emma’s cheek.
“You hit a five-year-old?”
“She needed to learn respect.”
Something inside me snapped.
Vanessa reached for Emma again, and I shoved her hand away.
She shoved me back.
“You don’t touch me!”
Then she grabbed my hair.
I handed Emma to my sister and lunged at Vanessa.
We crashed into a table, sending glasses and flowers across the floor as guests screamed.
Security rushed toward us.
But before they arrived, an older man near the head table stood up and shouted, “STOP!”
Everyone froze.
Vanessa immediately pointed at me.
“She attacked me! Throw her out!”
The man walked closer, looked at Emma’s swollen cheek, then looked at Vanessa.
His face changed.
“Did you slap that child?”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“She deserved it.”
The man slowly removed his wedding boutonniere.
Vanessa suddenly stopped smiling.
“Dad?”
He looked at the groom, then at the entire ballroom.
“No wedding is happening tonight.”
Vanessa went pale.
May you like
Then he pointed at Emma and said something that made the whole room gasp.
“Because that little girl is the reason this family still has a fortune.”
