Chapter 1

A terrified 7-year-old boy ran into the police station sobbing while an angry man chased him through the doors. He grabbed my uniform and screamed, “That’s my stepdad—he locked my mom in the shed!”
I was finishing paperwork at the front desk when the boy burst inside.
His face was wet with tears, and one of his shoes was missing.
“Please help my mom!”
A man rushed in seconds later.
“Ethan, get over here!”
The boy screamed and wrapped both arms around my waist.
“No! Don’t let him take me!”
I stepped between them.
“Sir, stay where you are.”
The man stopped, breathing hard.
“I’m his stepfather. He’s having a tantrum.”
The boy shook violently against me.
“He hurt Mommy.”
The man’s face changed.
“He doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”
I crouched beside the child.
“What’s your name?”
“Ethan.”
“Where is your mom, Ethan?”
He pointed toward the street.
“In the shed behind our house.”
The stepfather suddenly moved toward us.
I put my hand up.
“Don’t take another step.”
Ethan started crying harder.
“He locked her in there last night.”
My partner was already calling for backup.
The man shouted, “The kid is lying!”
Ethan lifted his sleeve.
There were bruises along his arm.
“She tried to stop him from hitting me.”
The entire station went quiet.
Then Ethan whispered something that made my stomach turn.
“I heard Mommy stop crying this morning.”
We put the stepfather in handcuffs and raced to the address Ethan gave us.
The backyard shed was locked from the outside.
“Police!” I shouted.
No answer.
We broke the lock.
Ethan’s mother was lying on the floor, barely conscious.
But beside her was a phone still recording.
My partner picked it up and pressed play.
The first voice we heard wasn’t the stepfather’s.

It belonged to someone Ethan recognized immediately.
He stared at the screen and whispered, “Why was Grandma there?”
