Chapter 9

Katherine didn't want Richard anywhere near her.
That was her first answer.
Her second was also no.
So was her third.
Then Emma sat beside her bed and asked one question.
"Do you want to see me graduate someday?"
Katherine cried.
The transplant team tested every possible relative.
Elias was not suitable.
Richard was.
A near-perfect match.
When Daniel delivered the news, nobody spoke.
Finally Katherine whispered, "Of course he is."
Emma squeezed her hand.
"Will you do it?"
Katherine stared at the window.
"I don't know."
Elias sat across from her.
"You don't owe him forgiveness."
"I know."
"You don't owe him gratitude."
"I know."
"If he donates, it doesn't erase anything."
"I know."
She looked at her father.
"Then why does it feel like accepting means he wins something?"
"Because you spent eleven years needing him to lose."
Katherine's eyes filled.
Elias continued.
"Maybe winning is simply staying alive."
That broke something inside her.
She turned toward Emma.
Her daughter was trying not to cry.
Katherine touched her face.
"Okay."
Emma leaned into her.
"Okay?"
"Okay."
Richard was brought to the hospital under guard.
The transplant was not guaranteed.
Doctors needed more testing.
Psychological evaluation.
Legal review.
Because Richard was under arrest, everything became more complicated.
Katherine agreed to see him once.
Police remained outside.
Richard entered wearing handcuffs.
He looked older than he had two days earlier.
No expensive suit.
No perfect hair.
No controlled smile.
Just a tired man who had finally run out of places to hide.
Katherine sat in the chair beside her bed.
"Why?"
Richard looked at her.
"Which part?"
"All of it."
He laughed once.
"I don't know where to start."
"The money."
He looked at the floor.
"I made a bad investment."
"Eight million dollars?"
"At first it was two."
"Then?"
"I tried to recover it."
"By stealing more."
"Yes."
"Why use my credentials?"
"Because you had access."
"And you didn't?"
"Not to those accounts."
Katherine stared at him.
"So you decided to destroy me."
"I thought I'd fix it before anyone knew."
"Mom knew."
His face changed.
"Yes."
"She gave you a chance."
"Yes."
"And you kept stealing."
"Yes."
Katherine shook her head.
"Then you blamed me."
"I was scared."
"You threatened my unborn child."
Richard closed his eyes.
"I didn't know how far it would go."
"You ordered someone to run my car off the road."
He opened his eyes.
"I told them to scare you."
Katherine laughed bitterly.
"That's your defense?"
"No."
"You almost killed me."
"I know."
"You made Dad think I abandoned him."
"I know."
"You let Emma grow up poor while you lived in a mansion."
His voice cracked.
"I didn't know where you were."
"You didn't look."
Richard had no answer.
Katherine's eyes filled with tears.
"Do you know what she ate when I was too sick to work?"
He looked away.
"Toast."
He closed his eyes.
"Some nights, toast with sugar because I couldn't afford anything else."
"Katherine—"
"No."
Her voice rose.
"You don't get to look away."
He forced himself to face her.
"She wore shoes with cardboard inside them because the soles had holes."
Richard's eyes filled.
"She told her teachers she wasn't hungry because she knew the cafeteria bill was overdue."
He began crying.
Katherine did not stop.
"She worked in that restaurant because she was trying to feed me."
Richard covered his face.
"And your wife threw her on the floor because she spilled food on a dress."
"I'm sorry."
"No."
Katherine leaned forward.
"Sorry is what you say when you bump into someone."
He lowered his hands.
"What do you want from me?"
"The truth."
"You have it."
"No."
She stared into his eyes.
"I want to know why you hated me more than you loved anyone."
Richard's face collapsed.
"I didn't."
"You did."
"I hated myself."
The answer stopped her.
Richard stared at the floor.
"Every time Dad praised you, I heard what he wasn't saying about me."
Katherine shook her head.
"That wasn't my fault."
"I know that now."
"You were forty years old."
"I know."
"You weren't a child."
"I know."
"Then stop talking like one."
He nodded.
Tears ran down his face.
Katherine took a slow breath.
"Why donate?"
Richard looked at her.
"Because Emma asked if she was going to lose her mother."
Katherine froze.
"She spoke to you?"
"Through the detective."
Richard swallowed.
"She didn't ask me to save you."
"What did she say?"
"She said, 'You already took eleven years from my mom. Don't take the rest.'"
Katherine covered her mouth.
Richard looked toward the door.
"I can't return the years."
"No."
"I can't fix the damage."
"No."
"I can't make you forgive me."
"No."
He nodded.
"But maybe I can stop taking."
Katherine cried silently.
After a moment she whispered, "If you do this, nothing changes in court."
"I know."
"I will testify."
"I know."
"Emma does not have to visit you."
"I know."
"I may never forgive you."
Richard took a shaky breath.
"I know."
She looked at him for a long time.
"Then yes."
The transplant surgery took place three weeks later after extensive evaluation and court approval.
Richard donated a kidney.
Katherine received it.
Both survived.
When Katherine woke, Emma was sleeping beside her.
Elias sat nearby.
"Did it work?"
He smiled.
"The doctors are optimistic."
Katherine closed her eyes.
"Richard?"
"Recovering."
"Police?"
"Still there."
"Good."
Elias laughed softly.
"You haven't changed."
"Neither have you."
His smile faded.
"I hope that's not true."
Katherine looked at him.
Elias leaned forward.
"I spent my life believing providing for this family meant building something enormous."
He looked around the hospital room.
"I was wrong."
"Dad—"
"I should have listened."
She said nothing.
"I saw the documents against you and treated the company as if it deserved more protection than my daughter."
"You didn't know."
"I didn't ask enough."
Katherine's eyes filled.
"I hated you."
"I know."
"Some days I still do."
"I know."
"But when you stepped in front of that gun—"
Elias looked away.
"You don't need to make that moment bigger than it was."
"You got shot."
"Small detail."
"Dad."
He looked at her.
She whispered, "I missed you."
His face broke.
Elias stood and wrapped his arms around his daughter as carefully as he could.
For eleven years, Katherine had imagined that moment.
In some versions she screamed.
In others she walked away.
She never imagined simply crying against his shoulder.
Emma woke.
She looked at them.
Then smiled.
"Finally."
They separated.
Katherine laughed through tears.
"Go back to sleep."
"No."
Emma sat up.
"Are we a family now?"
Katherine looked at Elias.
Elias looked at her.
"Families are complicated," Katherine said.
Emma frowned.
"That's a terrible answer."
Elias smiled.
"It runs in the family."
Weeks later, Richard pleaded guilty to multiple counts of fraud, conspiracy, evidence tampering, attempted coercion, and charges connected to Katherine's crash.
Vivienne initially tried to make a deal.
Then prosecutors discovered she had arranged the storage-unit fire.
Her cooperation did not save her.
She pleaded guilty to kidnapping, assault, arson-related charges, obstruction, and conspiracy.
The restaurant video became evidence.
So did Emma's recording.
So did Margaret's files.
The entire Blackwood empire was forced into public scrutiny.
Board members resigned.
Executives were investigated.
For a while, reporters camped outside every Blackwood building in New York.
Then Elias did something nobody expected.
He called a press conference.
Katherine stood beside him.
Emma watched from backstage.
Elias stepped to the microphone.
"I spent decades building a name."
Cameras flashed.
"I believed protecting that name meant protecting a company."
He paused.
"I was wrong."
The room fell silent.
"A family name means nothing if the people carrying it are sacrificed to preserve appearances."
Katherine looked at him.
Elias continued.
"So today, Blackwood Holdings will undergo independent restructuring."
Reporters shouted questions.
He raised a hand.
"And effective immediately, I am resigning as chief executive."
Katherine's eyes widened.
He had not told her.
Neither had Daniel.
Elias turned toward her.
"The next chapter belongs to someone who understands what power costs when it is abused."
Katherine shook her head.
"No."
Elias smiled.
He had expected that.
She stepped toward the microphone.
"I am not taking your job."
Laughter moved nervously through the room.
Elias raised an eyebrow.
"Then what are you doing?"
Katherine looked at the cameras.
May you like
"Changing it."
And for the first time, the future of the Blackwood family would not be decided by one man.
