Chapter 12: The Commander’s Last Mission
Nobody spoke after Vale disappeared.
The screen went black.
But his words remained.
You were my first success.
I looked at my mother.
She looked away.
That hurt more than anything.
Because I knew.
She knew exactly what he meant.
“Tell me.””
My voice was quiet.
“Tell me everything.””
My mother closed her eyes.
For a moment, she wasn’t a scientist.
She was just my mother.
A woman who had made impossible choices.
“I worked with Vale before I knew what he wanted.””
Hayes lowered his weapon.
“How long?””
“Years.””
“You helped him.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked away.
The person who raised me.
The person I missed every day.
Was connected to the nightmare that destroyed Ethan’s life.
My mother stepped closer.
“I thought we were helping soldiers.””
“What did you think you were creating?””
“Treatment.””
“For what?””
“For trauma.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
He continued.
“Vale was never treating trauma.””
My mother nodded slowly.
“He was studying loyalty.””
The room went silent.
I remembered Ghost.
His obedience.
His bond.
The secret commands.
The way he trusted me without hesitation.
“He wanted soldiers who couldn’t betray him.””
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“He wanted people who would follow one person completely.””
I whispered:
“Ethan.””
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“Ethan was never his subject.””
“No.””
“Then why him?””
“Because Ethan was the first person who proved the program could fail.””
Hayes looked confused.
“How?””
My mother looked at Ghost.
“Because the bond worked both ways.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“Vale believed control was created through fear.””
She looked at me.
“But Ethan proved trust created a stronger connection.””
Ghost moved closer.
“Ethan changed everything.””
My mother reached toward the dog.
“He taught Ghost something Vale could never understand.””
“What?””
She smiled sadly.
“Choice.””
A loud crash interrupted us.
The laboratory doors shook.
They had found us.
Hayes immediately moved.
“We need to leave.””
My mother looked at him.
“There’s no way out.””
“There’s always a way.””
“Not this time.””
The doors began to open.
Hayes checked his weapon.
“Madison, take Ghost and go with your mother.””
I stared at him.
“What about you?””
His expression was calm.
“I’ll slow them down.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Ethan did the same thing for you.””
The words hit me.
I remembered the video.
Ethan’s fear.
His warning.
His sacrifice.
“No more people dying for me.””
Hayes smiled faintly.
“Then make sure it means something.””
The doors burst open.
Armed men entered.
Hayes fired.
Chaos exploded.
My mother grabbed my hand.
“This way.””
We ran through a side passage.
Ghost stayed beside us.
Behind us, gunfire echoed.
I wanted to go back.
I wanted to help Hayes.
But my mother pulled me forward.
“He knew the risk.””
“I can’t leave him.””
“You can.””
I stopped.
She looked at me.
“Because that’s what Ethan wanted.””
We reached another chamber.
At the center was a large computer system.
My mother entered a code.
The screen activated.
Files appeared.
Thousands of names.
Including mine.
I stared.
“What is this?””
“The complete record.””
“Of what?””
“Everyone Vale experimented on.””
A file opened.
The name at the top made me freeze.
ETHAN CROSS.
I clicked it.
A video loaded.
Ethan appeared.
But this time he wasn’t afraid.
He looked angry.
Determined.
“Madison.””
I stepped closer.
“If you’re seeing this, then you found the truth.””
He looked directly into the camera.
“I need you to know something.””
The video paused.
My mother whispered:
“Don’t.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Her face was full of fear.
“Because that recording was made after Ethan escaped.””
My heart stopped.
“Escaped from where?””
She didn’t answer.
The video resumed.
Ethan’s voice filled the room.
“I didn’t disappear seven years ago.””
A pause.
“I disappeared three months ago.””
I froze.
Three months.
The same date on Ghost’s harness.
The same date Ethan’s coordinates were engraved.
Ethan looked over his shoulder.
Someone was behind him.
Someone I couldn’t see.
Then he said:
“Madison, if you’re watching this, it means Vale found you.””
My breathing stopped.
“But there’s something you need to know.””
The screen flickered.
Ethan leaned closer.
“Ghost didn’t come back to find you.””
A shadow moved behind him.
“He came back to warn you.””
The video glitched.
Then Ethan said the words that shattered everything I believed.
“Because the person who betrayed me seven years ago…”
The screen froze.
A name appeared.
And I felt the world disappear beneath my feet.
It wasn’t Marcus Vale.
It wasn’t Daniel Reed.
May you like
It wasn’t anyone I expected.
It was someone standing in the room with me.
